I painted this spread for the book - "How to Slice a Slab Pie" - because oh yes, slab pie is a very real thing and it's just one more way to get more, well, pie. Squared!
My dearly departed old food blog, Simmer Till Done, is finally, really, truly departed, but I'd like to think it lives on in a few tiny corners of a few people's minds (other than my mom), and also on their Thanksgiving tables. In case anyone needs it here is the formerly-seen-on-Simmer recipe for my cranberry-cherry relish, which is still ridiculously easy, still crazy-tart and still good on, well, anything. Happy Thanksgiving!
Cranberry-Cherry Balsamic Relish
My absolute lip-puckering favorite. It packs a serious tart punch, it's absurdly easy, and worth making double for the leftover sandwiches alone.
1 12-oz bag cranberries, picked over
1 cup light brown sugar
½ large orange, peeled and segmented
1 cup dried cherries
1 1/2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1 tsp cinnamon
Place dried cherries and orange in food processor bowl; process to small bits. Add cranberries, brown sugar, balsamic vinegar and cinnamon, then pulse to finely chopped (some coarse spots are fine). Taste for seasoning and adjust to your own taste. May be made several days ahead; flavor deepens over time.
I've had some nutty dreams lately, like this one, in which for some reason I am at Martha Stewart's house - specifically, the one in Maine - and Martha is sitting on her expansive terrace over the ocean and barking at me: "Marilyn, check the fennel!"
I don't know what she means: In the garden, in the spice cabinet, on the stove? In bread? I don't know, but I am frantically running in and out of the house trying to figure it out and the all the while Martha is sitting out there in a deck chair, yelling it over and over again. #marilyncheckthefennel #ohmartha #IblameTrump
I recently put out the question: Did your dad ever make breakfast? I got some pretty wonderful answers. A sampling:
"My dad is one of those who doesn't normally know how to find the refrigerator. But when my mom is out of town and he's on his own, he makes himself amazing omelettes. I don't know how he learned to make them. He's never made one for any other living soul as far as I know. I amount of pleading will do it. He only makes them for himself when he's alone in the house."
"A couple of times a week, we'd get my dad's famous prune juice cocktail: a tall glass of chilled prune juice with cream gently poured in to form a beautiful spiraling cloud. Like a White Russian, but for kids."
"My dad made killer scrambled eggs. He said that they were so good because he sang "Yankee Doodle" while he was scrambling."
"My (Jewish) dad regularly made breakfast omelettes shaped like Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer with a dollop of grape jelly on the nose."
"My dad did not make breakfast but my grandfather made the most amazing onions and eggs. He would cook Spanish onions in a ton of butter for two or three hours, torturing us with the smell of slowly caramelizing onions. And then he would whisk eggs and cream cheese together and pour that over the long cooked onions. It was the most glorious thing."
One of my favorite replies came from the delightful author Crescent Dragonwagon - she of the greatest name ever - who said: "My father's breakfast contribution was freshly squeezed orange juice. Once he would make it, he would cover each glass and stand at the foot of the stairs, yelling up to us who were still sleeping, "Hurry up, the vitamins are escaping!"
